Don't Eat that Dreck!

Eat Pure Foods for Good Health

Having avoided eating both fish and the bottom-feeders known as "shellfish" all my life, and known many people to have been poisoned by them, I'm happy to report that my instinct was good. Shellfish contain domoic acid, which is responsible for kidney damage in humans as well as in sea-creatures who live on them. Domoic acid from shellfish is also known to cause a brain-condition known as amnesic shellfish poisoning. On my page, "Elegant Health", there are several articles about the dangers of fish and seafood. Here is an instructive report from February, 2014:

‘Safe’ levels of neurotoxin found in seafood may cause kidney damage

M-J's Water-Wise Cacti Garden

Posted on May 4, 2015 at 2:40 PM

Cactus flowers are rare. Nobody seems to knows why some cactus buds open and others do not. These cactus flowers bloomed in my water-wise Mojave Desert garden on April 28th, 2015. I consider it a miracle!

Elegant Garden Furniture

Posted on May 4, 2015 at 2:35 PM
Plastic furniture is all right indoors, especially if it is in the high-styled modern idiom, and was created by or emulates that of 1950s and 1960s designers such as Eero Saarinen. But outdoors, one ideally will have garden or patio furniture made from wrought iron or of teak-wood, which will not deteriorate from exposure to the elements. Wooden and iron furniture exists in perfect harmony with landscaping and nature, especially when made in greens, browns, and other earth-tones.

Here is my Princeton, New Jersey garden courtyard, where I had outdoor dining furniture by the now-defunct, elegant wrought-iron furniture company Lyon-Shaw, and a smaller chat-table in iron, wicker and tile, by Alfresco Home.

NightLift Bras

Developed by renowned plastic surgeon Randal Haworth, MD, FACS, NightLift® is the first and only sleepwear collection specifically designed to protect the breasts and décolletage. During his 20 years of private practice in Beverly Hills, Dr. Haworth found that those breast patients who wore a bra while sleeping had higher, firmer bosoms. NightLift helps to prevent sagging and drooping over time by keeping the breasts perfectly immobile, but always comfortably supported.

Reine de Saba

Posted on February 15, 2015 at 4:35 PM

I made this classic Reine de Saba (Queen of Sheba) cake using Julia Child's recipe, which I found in The French Chef Cookbook, page 285. I believe it is also somewhere on the web. It's a good dessert for those who love almond cake with chocolate icing.

Tanning Does Damage

Posted on February 15, 2015 at 3:10 PM

The so-called "unretouched" photo of Cindy Crawford dressed as a rapper-thug, with her torso and legs bare, is causing a lot of comment. What it should tell women and girls of all ages is that getting a suntan is really stupid, and will be a source of regret later on, when formerly soft skin turns to something that looks and feels like elephant hide.

Elegant Robe

Posted on February 6, 2015 at 12:35 PM

A few years before Facebook, I photographed myself in an elegant robe made of black velvet with white satin trim. It was the sort of thing in which one would not be embarrassed to be seen on an impromptu basis--answering the door to package deliveries, for example. I miss that old robe, but I still have my silk one by Sulka as a consolation.
